I have numerous 20 gallon containers. They are essentially the height of a five gallon bucket, but much larger in circumference. How would I make a self watering container out of them?

Do those containers have lids? I ask because what you need is a "shelf" 4 or 5 inches off the bottom, to support the growing mix, and create the reservoir. If it has a lid, you can cut that to make the shelf. To elevate the shelf above the bottom, you need some 4" PVC, or other things to form the wicking chambers, and support the shelf. In an 18 gal tub I use 5 columns, with one in the center, and one on each corner, and 3 of them as wicking chambers.
If no lid, maybe you can find something else to make the shelf out of? And pour 4 gal of water in one of the containers, and see how deep it is, then make the shelf at least a half inch above that - tomatoes need a lot of water, and I figure you will be growing a few of them! The old Earthbox, with a 2 gal reservoir, would dry up with two plants, and my timer filling it twice a day, so I had to set it for every 8 hours. Now I use my homemade ones, with 4 gal reservoirs, and twice a day is plenty.

Thank you. I have a few of these and hope to try making this over the winter.
