I love strawbale gardening. I moved my squash off the ground onto strawbales 6 years ago because of too much rain and it's been wonderful. I think it's also helped in keeping the dreaded squash bug away. This year I also planted cucumbers in strawbales.

Do you use whike bales to frame the bed? I ask because straw is pricey here- $8 per bale- and if I could use sections instead, it might be economical to try.

No I plant directly in the bales. I think I paid $4.00 a bale this year. I've read online that people try to use the same bale for 2 years but I don't because they get out of shape after a while especially if there's lots of rain plus I'm concerned squash bugs will over winter in them. After garden season we use the straw over grass seed or over the path the big dog makes in the yard.
